Chris Sutton believes Unai Emery is still searching for trust in Aston Villa’s new-look squad after a dramatic summer overhaul.
Villa brought in 10 players during the transfer window, but only Zion Suzuki, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Nicolas Jackson have been handed Premier League starts by Emery so far.
Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Monday Night Club, Sutton suggested the manager remains more comfortable relying on players already familiar with his demands.
The BBC report carrying Sutton’s comments quotes him saying Emery “clearly doesn’t have the trust with enough of the new signings right now”.
Unai Emery taking patient Aston Villa approach
Emery has traditionally taken time integrating players into his tactical structure.
Youri Tielemans is an obvious previous example, having waited several months for his first Villa start before becoming a key player under the Spaniard.
The current rebuild is considerably larger.
Villa sold several established first-team players during the summer before bringing in the likes of Alejandro Garnacho, João Gomes, Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Ibrahim Mbaye and Leon Goretzka.
Our analysis of Emery’s patient approach with Garnacho has already highlighted how tactical familiarity can determine when new arrivals receive opportunities.
Sutton nevertheless believes Emery has earned patience after repeatedly delivering strong Premier League finishes at Villa Park. He argued that the volume of major departures made an immediate rebuild particularly difficult.
Wednesday’s Carabao Cup trip to Coventry City could now provide Emery with an opportunity to accelerate that integration.
Our Aston Villa predicted XI against Coventry includes several summer arrivals who could benefit from rotation.
Garnacho, Harwood-Bellis and Gomes are all pushing for significant minutes.
The question is whether Coventry becomes the night Emery starts placing greater trust in Villa’s new generation.
