Johan Manzambi has given Unai Emery a major Aston Villa selection decision after starring in Saturday’s dramatic 3-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur.
The summer signing was handed a starting role in north London and responded with a goal and an assist as Villa finally secured their first Premier League victory of the season.
Manzambi opened the scoring in first-half stoppage time before playing the decisive pass for Nicolas Jackson’s second after the break.
Emiliano Buendía eventually made it 3-0 before late Tottenham goals from Conor Gallagher and Jan Paul van Hecke created a far more nervous finish than Villa would have wanted.
Villa survived, though, and Manzambi’s performance was central to the breakthrough victory.
Manzambi rewards Emery’s Tottenham gamble
Emery faced several major selection calls before kick-off.
Tammy Abraham had scored twice against Coventry City in midweek, yet the Villa boss instead trusted Jackson through the middle and handed Manzambi another major opportunity.

Manzambi ensured the manager’s call paid off.
Villa spent long periods of the opening half defending against Tottenham pressure, but the 19-year-old remained dangerous whenever the visitors escaped.
His reward arrived deep into stoppage time.

The timing was crucial.
Tottenham had created the better opportunities before the goal, with Zion Suzuki making several important saves to keep Villa level.
Reuters confirmed Manzambi’s opener came during a spell when Tottenham captain Micky van de Ven was temporarily off the pitch receiving treatment.
Manzambi and Jackson punish Tottenham again
Manzambi’s influence did not end with his goal.
Villa’s second demonstrated exactly what he can offer Emery’s attack.
He combined with Jackson before the striker drove at the Tottenham defence and produced an excellent finish to double the advantage in the 67th minute.
The assist completed a decisive contribution from Manzambi in a game Villa desperately needed to win.

Emery now has a major Villa selection decision
That leaves Emery with a welcome problem.
Villa’s difficult opening to the season had created pressure for the manager to find an attacking combination capable of producing regularly.
Manzambi has now made an emphatic case to remain part of it.
Jackson also strengthened his position by scoring after being preferred to Abraham, while Buendía capped another influential performance with Villa’s third.
The full sequence of events can be found in our Tottenham 2-3 Aston Villa match report.
There will be tougher tests ahead, and one outstanding afternoon should not settle Emery’s team permanently.
However, Manzambi has now shown that he can influence Premier League matches rather than merely offer potential from the bench.
After waiting five games for their first league victory, Villa finally have some attacking momentum.
Emery’s next challenge is deciding whether Manzambi has done enough to keep his place.
