Emi Martinez Dismisses Yashin Trophy Hopes After Chelsea Transfer

Emi Martinez has dismissed his chances of winning the Yashin Trophy for a third time after leaving Aston Villa for Chelsea this summer.

The Argentina international is among the 10 nominees for the goalkeeping award, having previously won it in 2023 and 2024 during his six-year spell at Villa Park.

Asked about his chances while away with Argentina, Martinez replied: “No chance. Messi, yes. Me, no.”

The comments were reported by Sport Witness, with his nomination reflecting both his final season at Aston Villa and Argentina’s run to the World Cup final.

Emi Martinez plays down latest Yashin Trophy hopes

Martinez left Villa for Chelsea in a £7.5million deal during the summer, bringing an end to one of the most successful goalkeeping spells in the club’s modern history.

Our report on Martinez completing his Chelsea move detailed how Zion Suzuki subsequently inherited the No.1 role under Unai Emery.

Martinez’s final months at Villa included Europa League glory before he produced a record 12 saves as Argentina lost the World Cup final to Spain, covered in our World Cup final report.

His start at Chelsea has been more difficult, with 10 goals conceded across his first four appearances.

Another Yashin victory would therefore complete a remarkable hat-trick, but Martinez himself clearly does not expect to repeat the individual success he enjoyed while at Aston Villa.
