Aston Villa turn to Sørensen for immediate Newcastle test

Brian Sørensen has little time to settle into the Aston Villa Women dugout. His first match in temporary charge comes against Newcastle United Women on Wednesday night.

Villa confirmed Natalia Arroyo’s departure after a winless start to the Women’s Super League season. Sørensen, already part of the club’s women’s setup as technical adviser, will lead the side while Villa consider their next appointment.

The change follows Sunday’s 4–0 defeat at Tottenham. Villa have two points from four league matches, although they opened their Subway Players Cup campaign with a 2–0 win at Nottingham Forest.

Who is Brian Sørensen?

Sørensen previously managed Everton Women from 2022 until February 2026. He guided them to sixth place in his first WSL season before two successive eighth-place finishes. Everton parted company with him during his fourth campaign.

His existing role at Villa means he knows the squad, but Wednesday offers the first indication of how he wants the team to respond on the pitch. It would be premature to assume a change of system or personnel before his first team selection.

Newcastle visit Keys Park on Wednesday 30 September, with kick-off at 7.30pm BST. Our match guide has the venue and ticket details. That existing guide also needs its reference to “Natalia Arroyo’s side” updated before the match.
