Aston Villa’s scouting move questioned by former chief as he spots £5m–£20m transfer opportunity

Former Aston Villa chief executive Keith Wyness believes the club should have strengthened their South American scouting operation sooner, arguing the market offers opportunities to recruit players for £5m–£20m.

Speaking to Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, in comments published by Yahoo Sport, Wyness questioned the timing of Villa’s search for a specialist scout.

“Well, my question is, why does it take them so long?”

We covered Villa’s South American scouting vacancy last month. Wyness’s intervention now puts the potential transfer benefits under the spotlight.

Wyness identifies Aston Villa recruitment opportunity

The former Villa executive believes South America can offer talented young players at lower entry prices than the market for established European prospects.

His £5m–£20m assessment describes the opportunities he sees. It does not establish Villa’s budget or indicate that a particular signing is close.

Wyness also acknowledged the challenge of adaptation, with recruits needing to settle and develop quickly enough to contribute.

Our verdict: Value depends on more than the transfer fee

The attraction for Villa is clear: identify quality before a player’s price rises beyond reach.

But a smaller fee alone does not make a bargain. Wages, development time and suitability for Unai Emery’s team all matter.

Our ranking of Aston Villa’s best bargain signings weighs what players delivered after arriving.

That should be the test here too. A stronger scouting network is useful if it helps Villa find players who can improve the side.
