Already this summer Villa have let nine players leave on permanent deals to other clubs. This marking the first stage of manager, Tim Sherwood taking a hold of his squad and making it his own. The next stage will be deciphering which players should be shipped out on loan amongst who he plans to bring in to bolster his squad which is certainly looking quite lightweight after the opening weeks of the transfer window. TVV have compiled a list of potential Villa players who could be set for a loan spell away from B6.
Callum Robinson
Robinson does look firmly in Tim Sherwood’s plans in the long run, but it remains to be seen if the England U20 international will be given the chance to try and cut it in the Premier League this season. The 20-year old spent most of last season out on loan at Preston helping them to promotion to the Championship scoring 7 goals. He earned rave reviews from ex-Villa and now Preston manager, Simon Grayson for his performances up top. Robinson has spoke of his ambitions to make the grade this season for Villa. He told the Birmingham Mail, “the aim is for me to play in the first team.”
If Sherwood does loose Benteke he will need to bolster his forward line. Could he guide Robinson to a sensational breakthrough season? We would not bet against it. A year in the Championship could also do him the world of good as he matures physically.
Riccardo Calder
Someone that has featured in matchday squads towards the back end of last season under Tim Sherwood is Riccardo Calder. Calder is a raw talent who can play in a handful of positions including left-back, left-wing, and central midfield.
Calder is diverse, but Sherwood will want him to nail down his best position soon so he can develop from there. A loan spell in the Football League could be exactly what he needs to find out where he naturally fits into a side. Also with no previous experience in the senior game it could do him good to come up against the likes of Billy Sharp, and Jordan Rhodes.
He was also part of the Villa side that won the NextGen series in 2013.
Kevin Toner
The centre-back is the captain of the Under-21 side which would make you presume he is the cream of the crop of Villa’s youngsters. Toner recently signed a new deal with his previous deal expiring in the summer. Many Premier League sides were circling if the Irishman did not commit to Villa Park.
Toner is an exciting prospect but Villa already have a bunch of first-team centre-backs that may currently block his path. A loan spell should be considered or Sherwood should let him lead for the U21’s again in the new season.
Other Potential Loanees
