Former Aston Villa winger André Green heads to India after two-title spell and Portuguese exit

Former Aston Villa winger André Green has joined Kerala Blasters, according to reports in India, taking the academy graduate’s career to another new country.

Khel Now reports that the 28-year-old has signed ahead of the Indian Super League season after becoming a free agent following his departure from Portuguese side AVS.

It is the latest overseas chapter for a player who previously won two league titles with Slovan Bratislava.

André Green takes another step away from English football

Green made his Premier League debut for Villa aged 17 against Tottenham in March 2016.

His route since leaving has included Sheffield Wednesday, Slovan and Rotherham, followed by spells in Greece and Portugal.

Kerala now offers another opportunity to establish himself, with Khel Now reporting that he can provide options on either wing or behind a striker.

Villa supporters will remember Dean Smith’s faith

Green’s Villa career included a return from his Portsmouth loan during the 2018/19 season.

At the time, Dean Smith explained why he recalled Green, identifying his pace and attacking qualities as useful weapons for the promotion push.

He also featured among our standout performers after Villa’s remarkable comeback against Sheffield United, when Smith’s side recovered from three goals down to draw.

Those memories give this move its Villa interest. Green’s career has taken a very different route from the one supporters might have imagined when he first broke through at Villa Park.
