Sherwood: Pressure will make us stronger

Aston Villa manager Ti Sherwood says that the pressure that both he and the team are under will make everybody at the club stronger.

There has been speculation that Villa will sack Sherwood if he fails to win one of the club’s next two matches, against Chelsea and Swansea.

This prompted assistant manager Ray Wilkins to say that it would be a “huge mistake” for Villa to sack Sherwood so early into the season.

However, the Villa boss has backed himself and his team to turn things around and has no doubts that he will keep the team in the top flight this season.

Sherwood said, as per the Birmingham Mail:

I have 100 per cent belief that we’ll stay in the Premier League. Once I get through this period everyone will benefit. Aston Villa will and I will.

The 46-year-old former Tottenham manager says he does realise why there is speculation about his future as results haven’t been good enough, but says that he sees the experiences of some of his peers and that shows him how quickly things can change for the better in football management.

I’m a football manager and am responsible for results. That’s what I’m paid for. I’ll stand up to this. It’s the nature of the game we’re in. I look up to managers who have stood up in tough periods. I take inspiration from Alan Pardew. He’s now favourite for the England job when Roy [Hodgson] leaves. A real turnaround. I take a lot of heart from managers who have been through difficult periods. This is my first tough period in management. We’ll soldier on and get through it.
