The Birmingham Mail have reported that Pierluigi Gollini is set to return to Italy after agreeing a long-term loan deal to join Serie A side Atalanta.
The 21-year-old Italian has singed until the end of the season and it is also expected that he will also stay there for the 2017/18 Serie A campaign. Atalanta have been looking for a replacement for Marco Sportiello, who is set to join Fiorentina, and they have decided on Gollini as his replacement.
Gollini started off as Villa’s number 1 after a £4 million move from Hellas Verona; however, due to a series of mistakes that cost Villa some vital points, he has dropped down the pecking order and now finds himself sitting behind Sam Johnstone, the Manchester United youngster who signed on loan last week, and his understudy Mark Bunn.
Although his time in the Midlands is coming to an abrupt end for the time being, he could still have a future at Villa Park if his loan spell is successful.
