Aston Villa have confirmed that Trezeguet will miss Friday evening’s Premier League meeting with Manchester United. The 26-year-old is ‘still recovering’ from a hamstring injury that he picked up in November’s 2-1 defeat to West Ham United and hasn’t featured in any competition since.
Trezeguet has made 10 appearances across the board this season, supplying two assists. The Egyptian international has been absent for all of December, missing Villa’s 1-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers, 0-0 draw with Burnley, 3-0 win over West Ham United, 3-0 win over Crystal Palace and 1-1 draw with Chelsea, but he could return later in January.
Dean Smith has used Jack Grealish, Anwar El Ghazi and Bertrand Traore in his absence and Villa have been unbeaten in the Premier League, so Trezeguet hasn’t been missed. In fact, the 26-year-old might find himself surplus to requirements when the season comes to a close.
He’s been short of form this season and isn’t likely to get back into the starting eleven, so his long-term future at Villa Park is up in the air. The in-form pair of El Ghazi and Grealish should start against United with Traore dropping to the bench, so where will that leave Trezeguet moving forward?
