Jack Grealish has an uncertain future at Aston Villa this summer as Manchester City are stepping up their pursuit of the 25-year-old, but Football Insider say they may have identified a potential replacement in Emile Smith-Rowe.
Why could Smith-Rowe be available?
The 20-year-old is coming off the back of a breakthrough season at Arsenal, but his future at the Emirates Stadium is up in the air after talks over a new deal broke down.
Villa lodged a £25m bid that was rejected but are prepared to offer £30m which they hope could be more successful, but it’s worth noting Arsenal have little desire to let Smith-Rowe leave.
Supporters on social media are adamant he’s going nowhere either.
Are Villa worried about losing Grealish?
Potentially. Although Villa are in a strong negotiating position as Grealish has four years remaining on his contract, the Midlands outfit know many clubs are keeping an eye on his progress and can seduce him with European football and trophies.
Smith-Rowe wouldn’t be a bad alternative if they can get him. The England U21 international has made 45 appearances in all competitions for Arsenal, scoring seven goals with seven assists.
Would Smith-Rowe be a good signing?
Yes, but he still has some developing to do. Smith-Rowe can operate as a central playmaker and on the left, so he could take up the same positions on the pitch as Grealish.
He created 27 chances and completed 88.7% of his passes from 20 Premier League games last season, so the midfielder has the potential to be an effective creator. Time will tell.
