Negativity on social media as Liverpool are linked with John McGinn

Aston Villa are coming off the back of a much-improved season under Dean Smith, so it’s no surprise many of their better performers are being linked with moves away.

Emiliano Martinez and Tyrone Mings were briefly linked with Manchester United, Douglas Luiz and Jack Grealish have been linked with Manchester City, Ollie Watkins has been linked with a move to Liverpool, and now Goal say John McGinn is a target for the Reds too.

The 26-year-old is rumoured to be on a shortlist containing Gladbach’s Florian Neuhaus, Brighton’s Yves Bissouma, Lille’s Renato Sanches and Ajax’s Ryan Gravenberch, but the reaction on social media hasn’t been too positive.

Villa supporters understandably don’t want to lose such an important player, but Liverpool fans feel McGinn would be an underwhelming acquisition – after luring Thiago away from Bayern Munich last summer, McGinn is deemed a downgrade in midfield.

Liverpool would do well to sign the Scotland international, however, as McGinn is a brilliant ball-winner who can bring the ball from deep into attacking positions and does pop up with a goal or two. Villa aren’t likely to entertain bids though, so they might be barking up the wrong tree.
