Aston Villa acted smartly in the transfer market this summer, bolstering their backline with Ashley Young from Inter Milan and Axel Tuanzebe on loan from Manchester United while strengthening their attack with Emiliano Buendia from Norwich City, Leon Bailey from Bayer Leverkusen and Danny Ings from Southampton, but they’ve failed in their attempts to bring in a central midfielder.
The Midlands outfit have looked at Atalanta’s Cheick Doucouré, Arsenal’s Emile Smith Rowe, Fulham’s André-Frank Zambo Anguissa and Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane, but they’ve retained an interest in Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse that isn’t capturing much interest from supporters on social media, likely down to his £50m asking price.
Villa fans believe that money would be better spent elsewhere, so there isn’t a lot of support for the acquisition. Ward-Prowse has made 323 appearances in all competitions for Southampton, scoring 33 goals with 40 assists, and is coming off the back of a prolific season – the 26-year-old had a hand in 16 goals from 38 league games.
No doubt Ward-Prowse is a talented player, but is he worth £50m?
