Fans on social media react as Aston Villa are linked with Julian Alvarez

Aston Villa have Danny Ings, Ollie Watkins, Cameron Archer, Keinan Davis and Wesley Moraes on the books, but the Midlands outfit might need to replace Davis and Wesley as their respective futures are uncertain – the pair have struggled for form, fitness and playing time under Dean Smith.

Davis is third in the pecking order and is yet to make a first-team appearance this season due to injury while Wesley is currently on loan at Club Brugge. Archer is still only a teenager, so Smith might want a more tried and tested option to call upon. Calciomercato say that could be Julio Alvarez.

The 21-year-old has risen through the youth ranks to River Plate’s first-team and has gone on to make 88 appearances in all competitions, scoring 27 goals with 23 assists. Alvarez bagged 11 goals and had six assists in 14 Liga Professional games this season, so it’s easy to see why Villa are keen.

Supporters on social media aren’t sure he’ll come to the Midlands, however, while others worry his arrival would stifle the development of Archer.

AC Milan, Ajax and Bayer Leverkusen are also keen on the €25m-rated (£21.2m) striker, so time will tell if Villa win the race for his signature.
