Fans on social media say ‘awful’ Matt Targett has been ‘terrible’

Aston Villa were eliminated from the FA Cup at the third-round stage by Manchester United on Monday, losing 1-0 at Old Trafford, but a number of players came away with a lot of praise for their performance.

Sadly, Matt Targett wasn’t one of them. The 26-year-old was below par on the night and received a player rating of 6/10 from Birmingham Live for an underwhelming performance. Supporters on social media weren’t happy either.

Against Man Utd, Targett played for 90 minutes, had 58 touches, won two aerial duels, completed 76.7% of his 30 passes, created one chance, whipped in two crosses with 50% finding a teammate, made three tackles, had two clearances and was fouled three times.

The 26-year-old has made 19 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring one goal with one assist. Targett’s form has been inconsistent in 2021/22 and Villa are closing in on a move for Lucas Digne, so his place in the side may be up for grabs.

Targett continues to draw the ire of supporters for poor performances, and Villa’s interest in Digne suggests Steven Gerrard has noticed too.
