Carlton Palmer believes Gerrard could sell Konsa

Ezri Konsa has been a regular alongside Tyrone Mings this season but may have an uncertain future after losing his starting place in recent weeks. The 24-year-old featured in 22 of Aston Villa’s first 24 Premier League games but has only played in one of their last six due to suspension and Steven Gerrard opting for Calum Chambers.

Konsa was being considered for an England callup near the end of last season and was one of the first names on Villa’s teamsheet until recently, so the suggestion he could be sold would have been ludicrous. Carlton Palmer believes it’s possible this summer, however, as Matt Targett’s departure proves no player is safe under Gerrard.

He told Give Me Sport: “It wouldn’t be a shock because you’ve seen what he did with the left full-back who went to Newcastle, Targett. He’s been consistently very, very good for Aston Villa, but Steven Gerrard has his ideas of how he wants to play the game of football, and what he wants his players to do.”

Konsa joined the Midlands outfit from Brentford in 2019 and has gone on to make 92 appearances in all competitions, scoring six goals with two assists. The 24-year-old has been an unused substitute in Villa’s last two Premier League games, so he’s at risk of permanently falling down the pecking order.

And with how Targett quickly went from being a first-team regular to on the periphery, Konsa can’t rest on any laurels. Villa under Gerrard are ambitious in the transfer market and will upgrade any position they see fit. Could Palmer be correct in his prediction?
