Gerrard must start Calum Chambers v Man City

Aston Villa travel to the Etihad Stadium to face Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon and won’t have Ezri Konsa for a second consecutive game after he picked up a knee injury. Villa revealed on their official website that Kortney Hause remains an absentee too, so Steven Gerrard has to start Calum Chambers alongside Tyrone Mings.

The 27-year-old joined Villa on a three-and-a-half-year deal from Arsenal in January and has gone on to make 10 appearances in all competitions, scoring one goal. Chambers quickly moved ahead of Hause in the pecking order and could get extended playing time until Konsa returns, so this is a great chance to prove his worth to Gerrard.

Chambers has started four of Villa’s last five Premier League games, once in a makeshift defensive-midfield role, so he’s more than just a squad player. The England international replaced the injured Konsa midway through Villa’s 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace and played a full 90 minutes in their 1-1 draw with Burnley, so he should keep his place.

Man City are no slouches and boast three consecutive home wins ahead of Sunday’s clash, so Chambers could be in for a busy afternoon.
