Martinez to Inter and Dumfries to Villa: the Birmingham-Milan axis that could reshape both clubs

Share

Inter Milan are monitoring Emiliano Martinez as Aston Villa eye Denzel Dumfries in a fascinating summer transfer axis.

  • Inter are tracking Martinez as they seek a Sommer replacement
  • The Argentine is contracted until 2029 but has been linked with an exit for multiple windows
  • Dumfries has a €25m release clause activating in July. Villa previously moved concretely for him

Inter want Martinez. The story that keeps returning

Emiliano Martinez’s future at Villa Park has been the subject of conjecture for multiple consecutive summers and this year’s version carries more credibility than ever.

Inter Milan are monitoring the 33-year-old’s situation as they seek a world-class replacement for Yann Sommer.

The Italian champions have also been linked with Tottenham’s Guglielmo Vicario, but if they believe the Argentine is achievable, they could pivot decisively in that direction.

The financial context is significant. Martinez earns £150,000 per week, making him one of Villa’s highest earners, and is contracted until 2029.

Villa will not sanction a departure without receiving fair value and securing a credible replacement simultaneously.

The replacement options: Trafford leads the queue

With Marco Bizot the only senior alternative between the sticks, Emery cannot allow Martinez to leave without a quality successor in place.

James Trafford remains the primary target: the 23-year-old Manchester City goalkeeper already identified as a long-term solution.

However, Newcastle United are also pursuing the Englishman, meaning competition for his signature will be fierce.

Marc-André ter Stegen and Lucas Chevalier have also emerged as alternative targets, providing Villa with genuine contingency options at varying price points.

The recruitment team are clearly preparing for multiple scenarios simultaneously.

Denzel Dumfries: the €25m clause that changes everything

The second strand of this compelling transfer axis concerns Denzel Dumfries. The Inter Milan wing-back’s €25m release clause activates throughout July: a financial mechanism that dramatically simplifies any potential pursuit.

Furthermore, significant representation changes surround the 29-year-old heading into the summer, his father Boris has taken over as formal agent, with Epic Sports retaining only image rights management.

Each agent change throughout Dumfries’ career has been driven by one consistent ambition, engineering a Premier League move. Villa previously made the most concrete approach of any English club.

The Dutchman declined on that occasion. However, with his contract expiring in 2027 and no renewal talks ever having taken place, the calculus this summer looks very different.

Transfer AxisDetail
Martinez to InterMonitored — Sommer replacement target
Martinez contractUntil 2029 — £150k per week
Dumfries release clause€25m — activates July 2026
Dumfries contractExpires 2027 — no renewal talks

Could both deals happen together?

The most intriguing possibility is that these two stories are not simply parallel, they could be directly connected.

Martinez’s sale to Inter generates the financial headroom to fund Dumfries’ €25m clause activation simultaneously.

One departure funds one arrival. The Birmingham-Milan axis resolves two positional needs in a single, elegant summer transaction.
