Emery makes feelings clear after Burnley draw. “I am so motivated and excited for Liverpool on Friday”

Unai Emery has delivered a passionate defence of his Aston Villa squad after Sunday’s frustrating 2-2 draw at Burnley and insists he is fully motivated for Friday’s Liverpool showdown.

  • Villa and Liverpool are level on 59 points heading into Friday’s crucial Villa Park clash
  • Bournemouth remain four points behind, Brighton six adrift, with two games remaining
  • Emery insisted he is “so, so proud” of his players despite acknowledging a difficult second half of the season
  • The Spanish manager described Friday’s Liverpool clash as “a huge challenge” and one he relishes

“So, so proud”. Emery’s passionate squad defence

Unai Emery arrived at his post-match press conference in a mood that surprised many observers. Despite watching his side drop two points against already-relegated Burnley, a result that leaves Champions League qualification unconfirmed with two games remaining, the Villa manager was defiant, emotional, and entirely unwilling to be critical of his exhausted squad.

“I’m very, very happy and with the result as well, very happy,” Emery stated. “It’s been very difficult to be fifth in the league until game 36. For Liverpool above us, for Bournemouth and Brighton behind us, they are fighting and they are fantastic. It’s fantastic to be where we are.” He acknowledged the frustration of dropping points but placed it firmly within the broader context of what this squad has achieved simultaneously across two competitions.

His most powerful words concerned the players themselves. “How we compete, how the players show with their wishes to win. I am so, so proud of them. After Thursday we achieved the final in the Europa League. To play in Europe and to play in the Premier League in the top positions is very difficult. We are doing it and the players are doing a huge effort.” That specific acknowledgement of the physical and mental demands placed on a squad operating at the highest level on two fronts simultaneously, reflects a manager who understands exactly what he is asking of his players in these final weeks.

The honest admission. The second half has been difficult

Emery did not pretend the recent run of form has been acceptable. His honesty about the second half of the season was characteristically direct. “Of course, the second part of the season we are struggling: we are not achieving the points like the first part of the season.” That candid acknowledgement, delivered alongside genuine pride in the squad’s broader achievements, captures the complexity of a campaign that has been simultaneously brilliant and frustrating in equal measure.

Squad fitness remains a pressing concern. Emery noted carefully: “Some of them are tired but they want to play and they are ready. Today it was very important not to have injured players.” That final point carries significant weight with Istanbul just ten days away. The 2-2 draw at Turf Moor was disappointing, but emerging without new injuries was a meaningful victory in itself.

“So motivated for Friday”. Liverpool is everything

Despite the European final dominating headlines, Emery was unambiguous about the importance of Friday’s rearranged home clash with Liverpool. The two clubs are level on 59 points separated only by goal difference with Bournemouth four points behind and Brighton six adrift. A Villa victory on Friday would go a long way toward confirming Champions League qualification regardless of the Freiburg result.

“I am so motivated, so excited for the match on Friday against Liverpool,” Emery told VillaTV. “We are going to test against them which team is, in this moment, better than the other in the table. We have the same points. Of course, it’s Liverpool and it’s going to be very difficult. It’s a huge challenge and then prepare for the final against Freiburg in 10 days.” That dual-competition mentality embracing both challenges rather than sacrificing one for the other, is the hallmark of an elite manager operating at the peak of his powers.

His closing message to Villa supporters was equally compelling. “Every supporter and follower of Aston Villa should be so proud of everything we are doing. We should be so excited and motivated to try to face the last days, the last weeks, the last matches of the season.” That invitation to share in the excitement rather than dwell on dropped points reflects the spirit that has carried this club from 17th place in October 2022 to a Europa League final.

Emery is right to defend his players and right to demand perspective. However, dropping two points against relegated opposition with no pressure and no European commitments is not something that can be entirely excused by fatigue. Friday against Liverpool is now the defining Premier League fixture of the season. Win it and the Champions League conversation is effectively over. Lose it and the final days become considerably more anxious. The squad must find one more elite performance before Istanbul.
