Emiliano Martínez will have the opportunity to win a second consecutive World Cup after helping Argentina reach Sunday’s final against Spain.
The Aston Villa goalkeeper has started all seven of Argentina’s matches in North America. He has kept two clean sheets and remained Lionel Scaloni’s first choice throughout the holders’ run.
Martínez has not dominated every match in the manner he did during the 2022 tournament. Argentina have conceded seven goals, while the 33-year-old has occasionally faced questions over his save percentage.
However, his importance cannot be measured through clean sheets alone.
Martínez provides authority behind the defence, confidence during high-pressure moments and a proven presence should a knockout tie reach penalties.
FIFA listed Martínez with two clean sheets and six goals conceded before the semi-final. Anthony Gordon’s goal for England increased that total to seven, but Argentina still completed a late comeback to reach another final.
Martínez remains Argentina’s trusted goalkeeper
Martínez began the tournament with consecutive clean sheets against Algeria and Austria.
Argentina then conceded against Jordan before surviving increasingly difficult knockout matches against Cape Verde, Egypt and Switzerland.
His busiest performance came in the quarter-final against Switzerland. Martínez made several important interventions as Argentina required extra time to secure a 3-1 victory.
As Read Aston Villa reported after the quarter-final, the result created a semi-final meeting between Martínez and three Villa team-mates in England’s squad.
Morgan Rogers eventually created Gordon’s opening goal in Atlanta. Ezri Konsa and Ollie Watkins were also involved in Thomas Tuchel’s group.
Argentina looked close to elimination before Enzo Fernández equalised in the 85th minute. Lautaro Martínez then scored the stoppage-time winner from Lionel Messi’s delivery.
The Reuters match report confirmed Argentina’s late comeback and their place in Sunday’s final against Spain.
Martínez was not Argentina’s headline performer against England, but he remained composed after conceding and gave his side the platform to stay in the match.
Aston Villa still control Martínez’s future
The World Cup final arrives while Martínez’s club future continues to attract speculation.
Juventus have been linked with the goalkeeper throughout the summer. However, Villa have publicly rejected suggestions that he could leave for a cut-price fee.
Read Aston Villa recently reported that the club have no interest in selling Martínez cheaply. His contract runs until 2029, leaving Unai Emery’s side in a strong negotiating position.
Another World Cup triumph would only strengthen his status and value.
Martínez joined Villa from Arsenal in 2020 and has since established himself as one of the most decorated players in the club’s modern history.
He helped Argentina win the 2021 and 2024 Copa América tournaments, lifted the 2022 World Cup and played an important role in Villa’s 2026 Europa League success.
His international reputation has been built around major knockout matches. Penalty saves against the Netherlands and France defined Argentina’s triumph in Qatar, while his remarkable extra-time stop from Randal Kolo Muani became one of the tournament’s enduring images.
Martínez can complete another historic campaign
Spain will provide Martínez with his most difficult challenge of the competition.
Luis de la Fuente’s side have reached the final through a controlled possession game and one of the tournament’s strongest defensive records.
Argentina may spend long periods without the ball, placing greater responsibility on Martínez and the defenders in front of him.
The statistics do not suggest a flawless tournament. Two clean sheets from seven matches is a modest return compared with Spain goalkeeper Unai Simón’s record.
Martínez’s value has always been clearest when the pressure rises.
One more victory would make him a back-to-back world champion and add another remarkable achievement to his Aston Villa career.
