Aston Villa have reached a verbal agreement to sign João Gomes from Wolverhampton Wanderers in a deal worth up to €45million.
Fabrizio Romano reports that Villa will pay an initial €40m, with a further €5m included through add-ons.
The overall package is worth around £38m. Wolves have accepted the proposal and authorised Gomes to undergo a medical ahead of the transfer.
The Brazilian midfielder left training to travel and complete the next stages of the move, following an earlier update from BirminghamLive reporter John Townley.
Personal terms are not expected to prevent the transfer from being completed. Villa will now work through the medical, contract signing and remaining regulatory processes.
Gomes set to strengthen Villa midfield
Gomes will add Premier League experience and defensive intensity to Unai Emery’s midfield.
The 25-year-old joined Wolves from Flamengo in January 2023 and developed into one of their most important players. He is particularly effective when pressing, recovering possession and covering space in central areas.
His arrival comes after Youri Tielemans completed a £35m move to Manchester United. Amadou Onana is also facing a long spell out with a serious knee injury.
Villa have already been working to complete a club-record move for Johan Manzambi. As Read Aston Villa reported, the Freiburg midfielder was expected to undergo a medical before finalising his move.
Gomes offers a more established Premier League option and could operate alongside Manzambi or Boubacar Kamara.
He also impressed against Villa last season, scoring as Wolves secured a 2-0 win at Molineux. Sky Sports named him player of the match after his energetic midfield display.
Romano’s confirmation leaves Villa close to adding another major piece to Emery’s rebuild. An official announcement should follow once Gomes completes his medical and signs his contract.
