Aston Villa have added one of the Premier League’s leading ball-winners after completing the permanent signing of João Gomes from Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The Brazil international has moved to Villa Park in a package reportedly worth an initial £34million, with another £4million available through add-ons. Villa confirmed the transfer on Monday after Gomes completed his medical and left Wolves’ pre-season camp.
The 25-year-old arrives during a significant midfield rebuild. Youri Tielemans has joined Manchester United, while Amadou Onana is expected to miss nine months following surgery on an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

João Gomes gives Aston Villa defensive intensity
Gomes earned the nickname “The Pitbull” through his aggressive work without the ball.
Across the previous three Premier League seasons, he completed 380 tackles. According to Sky Sports’ analysis of the new Villa midfielder, that total is 83 higher than any other player in the competition. He also recorded the most possession recoveries during the same period.
Those numbers address a clear requirement in Emery’s squad. Onana offered strength and defensive coverage before suffering his serious knee injury, while Tielemans controlled possession through his passing.
Gomes will not directly replace either player. Instead, he gives Villa a midfielder capable of pressing opponents, competing for second balls and protecting the team during transitions.
He pressured opponents 1,646 times last season. No Villa player reached that figure under Emery, highlighting the energy he can add to the central areas.
His arrival has become even more important following ReadAstonVilla’s report that Onana faces nine months out after undergoing surgery.
Gomes can offer more than tackles
The midfielder’s defensive numbers dominate discussion of his game, but he can also move possession forward.
Gomes averaged almost 20 carries per 90 minutes in the Premier League last season. Sky Sports found that figure exceeded Morgan Rogers’ total and was more than double the numbers recorded by Tielemans, John McGinn and Emiliano Buendía.
That ability should help Villa escape pressure and launch attacks without relying entirely on progressive passing. Gomes can regain the ball and immediately carry it into space, allowing Emery’s attacking players to move beyond him.
His passing range remains an area for development. Emery prefers control in midfield, so Gomes must learn when to press aggressively and when to maintain his position.
The Brazilian also offers limited goal threat. He scored seven times in 116 Premier League appearances for Wolves, with his only goal last season coming against Villa at Molineux.
Aston Villa signing should suit the Holte End
Gomes’ intensity should quickly appeal to the Villa Park crowd.
He was voted Wolves’ Players’ Player of the Season following their relegation, having won the supporters’ award during the previous campaign. Former Wolves head coach Gary O’Neil also praised his team-first attitude and desire to succeed for the group.
Villa need those qualities during a season containing Premier League and Champions League football. Johan Manzambi adds technical ability and attacking potential, while Gomes supplies proven physicality and Premier League experience.
Boubacar Kamara can provide positional discipline behind him. McGinn can also operate alongside Gomes when Emery requires greater energy and pressing strength.
The £38million fee represents a substantial investment, but Villa have signed a midfielder entering his peak years. Gomes already understands English football and should require less adaptation than a player arriving from another league.
Emery must refine some of his more aggressive instincts, particularly against opponents who attempt to draw Villa out of shape. However, Gomes gives the manager qualities which were missing following Tielemans’ departure and Onana’s injury.
Villa have signed far more than a tackling specialist. They have added a mobile, competitive midfielder whose strengths should translate naturally to Emery’s evolving team.
