Aston Villa Women rebuild faces Chelsea opener after six signings

Aston Villa Women’s rebuild has gathered real substance this summer, but Natalia Arroyo will not have long to discover whether six new arrivals have solved the problems which held her side back last season.

Villa confirmed on Wednesday that tickets are now available for their opening six home Women’s Super League fixtures, bringing the new campaign another step closer.

Before those Villa Park dates arrive, Arroyo’s side face an immediate examination away to Chelsea on the opening weekend. The champions host Villa as the expanded 14-team WSL gets under way in September.

Villa will arrive looking considerably different from the team that finished ninth last season.

Aston Villa Women rebuild addresses problems at both ends

The raw numbers explain why change was required.

Arroyo and director of women’s football Marisa Ewers have responded with recruitment across the pitch.

Mia McAulay arrived from Rangers before Kamilla Melgård, Amalie Vangsgaard and Justine Kielland followed. Goalkeeper Emily Ramsey then joined following her Everton departure.

The sixth addition was Mathilde Harviken. ReadAstonVilla reported last month that the Norway international arrived from Juventus after winning four trophies in Italy.

Harviken should bring greater authority to a defence which shipped more than two goals per league match last season. Ramsey, meanwhile, provides fresh competition in goal.

The midfield recruitment is equally significant. Kielland brings Champions League experience and greater security in possession, while Melgård offers mobility and development potential.

Those additions should help Villa control games more consistently rather than repeatedly asking their forwards to rescue them.

Replacing Kirsty Hanson is Villa’s biggest challenge

There is still one enormous attacking question.

Kirsty Hanson scored 12 of Villa’s 28 WSL goals last season, accounting for almost 43 per cent of their league total before joining Tottenham.

Replacing that production cannot fall on one player.

Vangsgaard offers a more established central presence after arriving from Juventus, while 19-year-old McAulay brings pace and considerable upside after making more than 100 senior appearances for Rangers.

That contrast is important. Villa have not simply signed a direct Hanson replacement. They appear to be changing how their attacking threat is distributed.

Better midfield control from Kielland and Melgård should also create more opportunities for the forwards around them.

Chelsea will quickly show how far Villa have come

There is little opportunity for a gentle introduction.

Chelsea away is about as demanding an opening fixture as Arroyo could have been given. Villa did, however, push them hard last season, losing 4-3 at Kingsmeadow after briefly recovering from 3-1 down.

The new-look squad should therefore learn plenty immediately.

Villa’s commitment to playing their league home matches at Villa Park also continues while major work transforms the stadium. ReadAstonVilla recently showed how dramatically Villa Park has changed as the £100m redevelopment progresses.

The recruitment suggests similar ambition around the women’s team.

Six signings will not automatically turn ninth place into a challenge towards the top of the WSL. However, Villa have attacked several obvious weaknesses rather than making cosmetic changes.

The Chelsea opener should provide the first indication of whether those individual additions are already becoming a better team.
