Santi Aouna drops Aston Villa transfer bombshell that shuts down weeks of summer rumors

A major Aston Villa transfer update from Santi Aouna has cast serious doubt over weeks of speculation linking Unai Emery’s side with another left winger.

Villa have been associated with a number of wide attackers during the summer as Emery reshapes his squad following Morgan Rogers’ £117million move to Chelsea.

However, Foot Mercato journalist Santi Aouna has now delivered a very clear update.

Aouna reported on Sunday that Aston Villa are not looking for a left winger.

That immediately raises questions over several recent transfer links.

Aston Villa transfer update casts doubt on Jonathan Rowe move

Jonathan Rowe appeared to have returned to Villa’s radar only days ago.

ReadAstonVilla reported on Friday that Villa had supposedly reopened enquiries for the Bologna winger after reports in Italy suggested John McGinn’s injury had prompted the club to reassess their attacking options.

Sport Witness, citing Corriere di Bologna and journalist Marco Vigarani, reported Villa were “making enquiries” about the 23-year-old. Bologna had already rejected a €35m offer from Everton and were reportedly looking for a figure closer to €45m. Read the original Jonathan Rowe report

Aouna’s latest information now points in a very different direction.

It does not necessarily mean every previous link was inaccurate. Transfer priorities change throughout a window and clubs regularly explore opportunities without eventually pursuing them.

But if Villa are no longer looking for another player on the left, a move for Rowe becomes considerably harder to envisage unless Emery views him primarily in another role.

Alejandro Garnacho’s arrival has already given Villa a natural option on that flank.

The Argentine joined from Chelsea earlier this summer and has been brought in to provide the pace and direct running lost following Rogers’ departure.

Villa also have players capable of operating across several attacking positions, reducing the urgency to add another specialist left winger.

The latest Aston Villa transfer update may therefore offer a clue about where the club intend to spend next.

Emery still has decisions to make elsewhere in the squad, with midfield, defence and centre-forward all producing transfer stories during recent weeks.

Another left winger, according to Aouna, is not currently on that list.
