Unai Emery says Aston Villa ‘find it hard every year’ after Brighton collapse

Unai Emery has admitted Aston Villa repeatedly find the opening weeks of the season difficult while the transfer window remains open after his rebuilt side suffered a 4-0 defeat at Brighton. The Villa boss said he has encountered the same problem in each of the past three years and reiterated that he wants the window to close before the Premier League campaign begins.

Villa endured a disastrous afternoon at the Amex Stadium, conceding four times inside the opening 31 minutes before João Gomes was sent off shortly before half-time.

The 4-0 defeat against Brighton provided a brutal first Premier League examination of a squad which has undergone extensive change during the summer.

Speaking afterwards, Emery pointed towards the uncertainty created by the transfer window remaining open once competitive football has started.

“In the last three years, until the transfer window finishes, we have had problems like we are having now,” Emery said.

Asked whether the window should close before the season starts, his answer was emphatic.

“Always. Not just now, always. We are one club who find it hard every year.”

Emery highlights recurring Aston Villa transfer problem

The timing of Emery’s comments is significant.

Villa have already lost several established players during a major summer overhaul, with Ezri Konsa, Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans and Lucas Digne among those to leave.

Further uncertainty remains around other members of the squad.

Ollie Watkins was left out of Villa’s squad against Brighton amid interest from Al-Hilal, with Emery refusing after the match to explain whether the striker had declined to play.

Villa are simultaneously attempting to add further players before the deadline, including another centre-back following Konsa’s departure.

The summer transfer window remains open until 11pm BST on 1 September, meaning Emery faces another week of potential movement while trying to prepare his team for Premier League matches. Sky Sports confirms the deadline for Premier League clubs.

That lack of stability provides context for Emery’s frustration, although the Villa boss was careful not to use it to excuse Sunday’s performance.

Emery refuses to blame Aston Villa players after 4-0 defeat

Despite the scale of the defeat, Emery defended the players who were available to him at Brighton.

“The players here today are keeping the mentality I want for the team,” he said.

“Not complaining or blaming, even with a tough result today.”

That distinction is important.

Emery is clearly frustrated by the circumstances surrounding the transfer window, but he stopped short of blaming the players selected at the Amex.

Brighton simply overwhelmed Villa during an extraordinary first half. Victor Lindelöf’s own goal opened the scoring before Maxim De Cuyper struck and Jack Hinshelwood scored twice in quick succession. Sky Sports described the performance as a first-half masterclass from Brighton as Villa conceded four within 31 minutes. (skysports.com)

Gomes then compounded the situation by receiving a red card on his Premier League debut, earning a 1/10 in Read Aston Villa’s player ratings from the defeat.

Aston Villa need stability after summer upheaval

Villa’s rebuild was always likely to require patience.

Emery remains the most important constant, but the number of changes around him has been considerable.

The Guardian highlighted the scale of the overhaul before Sunday’s game, including major player departures and substantial changes to Emery’s backroom staff.

The 4-0 defeat does not determine how successful that rebuild will ultimately prove.

It does, however, strengthen Emery’s argument that asking managers to prepare for competitive matches while important players can still arrive or depart creates an avoidable problem.

Villa now have just over a week to bring greater clarity to the squad.

After what happened at Brighton, Emery will surely want that clarity as quickly as possible.
