Aston Villa face Friday Leon Goretzka cutoff before Arsenal

Aston Villa may need to complete Leon Goretzka’s registration by midday on Friday if Unai Emery wants the midfielder available against Arsenal on Monday, 31 August.

Villa have agreed a deal to sign the former Bayern Munich player, but his medical, contract and registration must still be completed before he can make his Premier League debut.

The timing has become more significant following João Gomes’ red card against Brighton, which leaves Emery needing another midfield option against the reigning champions.

Aston Villa face Friday Leon Goretzka registration cutoff

Premier League registration rules generally require completed documents to be submitted by midday on the last working day before the match in which a club wants a new signing to play.

That requirement previously prevented Ryan Gravenberch from making an immediate Liverpool debut against Villa, with the relevant registration rule explained here.

The timing is particularly relevant because the UK government confirms Monday, 31 August is a bank holiday.

With Saturday and Sunday also falling outside the normal working week, Friday, 28 August appears to be the key registration date if Villa want Goretzka available when Arsenal visit Villa Park at 8pm on Monday.

International clearance and any additional eligibility requirements would also need to be completed before the Germany international could feature.

Goretzka’s free-agent status means Villa do not need to agree a transfer fee with another club. However, that does not remove the requirement to register him in time for a specific Premier League fixture.

João Gomes suspension increases Emery’s midfield urgency

Villa reached an agreement with Goretzka following direct discussions involving Emery, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that his medical and contract signing were expected this week.

The 31-year-old would arrive with considerable experience. Bayern Munich confirmed Goretzka made 312 appearances during eight years at the club, winning the Champions League and multiple domestic titles.

His potential availability now carries greater importance after Gomes was dismissed for violent conduct during Villa’s 4-0 defeat at Brighton.

Premier League disciplinary guidance confirms that violent conduct normally results in a three-match suspension, ruling the Brazilian out of the Arsenal fixture unless the decision is successfully overturned.

Amadou Onana also remains unavailable, while Youri Tielemans has already departed. That leaves Boubacar Kamara, John McGinn and Ross Barkley among Emery’s remaining senior midfield options.

Completing Goretzka’s move would not guarantee an immediate start. Emery would still need to assess his fitness and determine how quickly he can integrate into Villa’s system.

However, getting the paperwork completed before Friday’s expected cutoff would at least give the manager another option for a match Villa can ill afford to approach short-handed.
