Lynn Wilms delivered the moment Aston Villa Women desperately needed with a remarkable late equaliser against Brighton & Hove Albion.
Natalia Arroyo’s side appeared destined for a second successive WSL defeat at the American Express Stadium.
Brighton had created the better opportunities and protected their advantage deep into the closing stages.
Then Wilms intervened.
The Netherlands international scored directly from a corner in the 89th minute to secure a 1-1 draw and Villa’s second point of the campaign.
Sky Sports captured Wilms’ extraordinary equaliser, with her delivery curling beyond the Brighton defence and into the net.
For a Villa side still finding its identity after a substantial summer rebuild, it was an important individual contribution.
Lynn Wilms gives Aston Villa Women another route to goal
Wilms has become an important part of Arroyo’s structure.
Her ability to advance from the right gives Villa width and another player capable of delivering into dangerous areas.
That attacking ambition was visible during the 1-4 defeat against Manchester City.
Wilms repeatedly looked to push Villa higher despite spending much of the evening dealing with City’s attacking threat.
Our subsequent Aston Villa Women player ratings also highlighted her willingness to provide an outlet from defence.
Against Brighton, that attacking quality eventually changed the result.
There was no intricate passing move or prolonged spell of pressure behind the equaliser.
Wilms simply produced an exceptional set-piece when Villa required one.
That matters for a team still searching for consistency in open play.
Wilms continues impressive record against Brighton
Brighton have already seen Wilms’ set-piece quality at close range.
When these teams met at Broadfield Stadium in September 2025, the defender almost won the game with another spectacular effort.
Wilms struck the crossbar from a late free-kick during that 0-0 draw.
Aston Villa’s official report from that meeting detailed how close she came to providing a decisive moment.
Just over a year later, Brighton were unable to escape.
Her latest intervention also demonstrates why attacking contributions from deeper positions could prove increasingly important.
Villa entered this season needing to replace a significant amount of lost attacking production.
Our analysis of Aston Villa Women’s attacking-output problem showed that departing players accounted for 36.2 per cent of last season’s WSL goals and assists.
That burden cannot fall entirely on Villa’s forwards.
Goals and assists from players such as Wilms could therefore become particularly valuable.
Aston Villa Women still have problems to solve
The equaliser should not disguise the work still required.
Villa remain without a WSL victory after three matches.
They earned a historic 1-1 draw away to Chelsea before Manchester City won comfortably at Villa Park.
The Brighton draw again showed Villa’s resilience.
It also demonstrated that Arroyo’s rebuilt team remains a work in progress.
The scale of that transformation was clear before the season when we examined six major additions to the Aston Villa Women squad.
Integrating so many new players was always likely to require time.
Wilms, though, already looks capable of providing decisive moments.
Nottingham Forest test comes quickly for Villa
Villa have little time to recover.
Their attention now turns to the Subway Players Cup and a trip to Nottingham Forest on Wednesday night.
The official competition schedule confirms the game will take place at the City Ground on Wednesday 23 September.
Kick-off is scheduled for 7pm BST.
The competition has moved to a new league-phase format this season, with teams playing six regionalised fixtures before the knockout rounds.
That should give Arroyo opportunities to use the depth created during Villa’s summer rebuild.
There will also be pressure to secure a first victory of the campaign.
Villa are still searching for it.
Wilms at least ensures they travel to Nottingham having produced another late response when defeat appeared likely.
