Gareth Southgate remains the Aston Villa player to have won the most England caps while representing the club following a summer that removed three current Three Lions internationals from Villa Park.
Villa had Ezri Konsa, Morgan Rogers and Ollie Watkins in Thomas Tuchel’s squad at the 2026 World Cup, but all three subsequently left during the club’s dramatic summer rebuild.
Our breakdown of Villa’s record World Cup contingent showed how prominent the club had become at international level before the squad was transformed.
Southgate still leads Aston Villa England list
According to research published by AVillaFan, Southgate earned 42 England caps while an Aston Villa player between 1995 and 2001.
Gareth Barry sits second with 30, while Konsa’s 28 appearances place him third.
Watkins earned 24 England caps during his Villa career, while Rogers reached 22 before completing his £117million move to Chelsea.
Darius Vassell also won 22 caps while with Villa.
The departures of Rogers, Konsa and Watkins were among the defining moves of a summer in which Villa generated more than £300million from player sales, as detailed in our Aston Villa summer net-spend breakdown.
Villa currently have no player in England’s senior squad during the international break, leaving Southgate’s long-standing club record untouched.
