Switzerland manager Murat Yakin has called on referees to protect Aston Villa midfielder Johan Manzambi after he repeatedly drew fouls during the 2-1 win over Slovenia.
According to Sport Witness, citing Monday’s print edition of Blick, opponents fouled Manzambi four times in the Nations League fixture.
The report does not confirm an injury to the Villa player.
Yakin wants protection for Johan Manzambi
Yakin linked the attention Manzambi receives to his willingness to take opponents on, while also acknowledging the referee’s handling of the game.
“They [referees] have to protect the players,” he said, in comments translated by Sport Witness.
Manzambi’s response focused on maintaining his composure and continuing to play his own game.
His latest appearance follows an encouraging international window. He previously earned praise during Switzerland’s victory over John McGinn’s Scotland, having also started against North Macedonia.
What it means for Aston Villa
For Unai Emery, the immediate priority is getting Manzambi back available for Saturday’s Premier League meeting with Brentford.
Switzerland still have Tuesday’s fixture against North Macedonia before his international commitments end.
Yakin’s comments highlight the physical attention Manzambi attracts. They should not be treated as evidence that he faces a spell out or that his Brentford involvement is in doubt.
