Aston Villa have reportedly tabled a £3.5-million bid for FC Groningen midfielder, Tjaronn Chery.
Chery, 27, was a key performer for Groningen last season as they finished in 8th place in Holland’s top league. Despite playing for the same side that Villa bought Leandro Bacuna from the two, have never played together as Chery was brought in as Bacuna left.
Last season the front man scored 15 goals in a role behind Groningen’s main striker and also had a further 10 assists adding to his goal tally. Furthermore, his performances led to a call-up for the Dutch national side. The Dutch international also helped Groningen lift their first trophy since being founded in 1971.
Last summer, Chery was part of the Groningen side, that took Villa apart chipping in with 2 goals including a stunning long-range strike.
Trickery is needed
Villa’s front line was stagnant for large parts of last season. A deal for Christian Benteke seems imminent as reported by TVV yesterday, so bringing in exciting forwards with an ability to score is something Sherwood is taking very seriously.
