Aston Villa are in talks to sign Southampton captain, and Portugal international, Jose Fonte according to Sky Sports sources. The 31-year old has emerged as a shock transfer target for Tim Sherwood as he continues to rebuild his squad.
The Portuguese man joined the Saints from Crystal Palace in 2010 when they were struggling in League One. Fonte, 31, was instrumental in Southampton reaching the Premier League and has gone on to make over 200 appearances for the Saints and pick up his first international cap for Portugal in 2014.
Last summer, Fonte agreed a three-year contract extension at the Saints after playing a vital role in Ronald Koeman’s side last season as they finished 7th.
A Brilliant Deal?
The potential signing of Jose Fonte is one that should bring much excitement to the Villa fans. Fonte has built a strong reputation on his powerful performances and strong leadership and would be seen as a massive coup if Villa were to complete a move for the Saints legend.
The move could also suggest an end to the career of Philippe Senderos at Villa and a potential move for Nathan Baker out on loan to the Championship. If Fonte was to join the Villans he would soon form a stern partnership at the heart of the defence with Micah Richards.
