Aston Villa and Premier League counterparts, Southampton are said to be keeping an eye on the 26-year old Rio Ave centre-back Marcelo.
Portuguese newspaper, A Bola, report how The Villans and Saints are both chasing the defender who joined Rio Ave in 2011 from Portuguese lower league outlet, Ribeirão. Marcelo made his way to Portugal after failing to make an impact at Vasco de Gama in Brazil as a youth.
He has been ever-present in Ave’s side for countless seasons.
An odd link as per – Matt Lynch
The centre-back is highly rated in Portugal, but you have to wonder why the likes of Porto and Sporting Lisbon have not already picked up on this man. Furthermore, it is another example of where Villa are taking a calculated risk which is really not worth taking.
The evidence is shown in the signing of Jose Angel-Crespo from Granada, who is yet to really play any part in Villa’s current doomed campaign.
The odds of finding a gem that can fit into a ‘Premier League’ side are slim.
