Aston Villa are planning a surprise bid for West Bromwich Albion centre half James Chester according to a report.
The Mirror report that the Villans have got an interest in the Welsh international as they look to strengthen the core of their side before the transfer window shuts at the end of August.
Chester was only a bit part player last season for the Baggies after a £8 million move from Hull City. He only started nine games last season, but the 27 year old impressed whilst on international duty for Wales at Euro 2016.
In recent weeks, the Villa defence has become more lightweight with the departures of Ciaran Clark, Jose Angel Crespo and the expected departure of Joleon Lescott and Micah Richards.
It is reported that Villa have already had contact with their local rivals over a move for Chester.
West Brom currently have six recognised centre backs in their current squad.
