Steve Bruce spoke at his press conference and said that he isn’t expecting a huge amount of transfer activity in January but did confirm that the club have a verbal agreement to sign one player, believed to be goalkeeper Sam Johnstone on loan from Manchester United.
Bruce said:
There’s one or two [deals] ticking away right now and one we have verbally agreed one. That looks as if it could happen.
The question now becomes about Johnstone’s role in the squad.United want to send Johnstone out on loan to get game time as he’s currently behind both David de Gea and Sergio Romero in the pecking order, so they’ll likely want to send him somewhere where he will play games, so loaning him to be a backup would make little sense.
Pierluigi Gollini is the current first choice ‘keeper and he’s playing pretty well so it will be interesting to see what Bruce does when the new keeper comes into the squad.
