According to the Telegraph, Steve Bruce wants to re-sign Fabian Delph – the man branded a “snake” by Villa fans – on a 5 month loan.
Bruce is desperate to reshape his midfield this transfer window and is hoping to sign at least two midfielders – they have already made a £3 million bid for Nottingham Forest’s Henri Lansbury. Others who have been mentioned have been Matty James from Leicester, Conor Hourihane from Barnsley and Brighton’s Dale Stephens.
However, it is the mention of Delph’s name that will cause the most debate among Villa fans, following his highly controversial move to Manchester City in the summer of 2015. Having recently signed a new contract, Delph turned down an £8 million pound move to City and released a statement saying he would be staying at Villa Park for the foreseeable future. However, just six days later, he left the club.
On his first visit back to Villa Park on the 15th November 2015, Delph was greeted with a chorus of boos and hisses, and a large majority of fans were even waving about inflatable snakes. As expected, Delph’s City career hasn’t got off the ground at all – he has only started 8 games since he joined, and is yet to start a game under Guardiola.
Guardiola has stated that Delph’s future at the club will be decided in the summer, but Villa will face a lot of competition if City decide to loan him out – Newcastle United and West Brom are said to be interested.
If we are being honest, Delph would be a very decent acquisition for Villa, but whether Villa fans will be able to forgive him for walking out on them is another matter all together. If he were to join, and he helped Villa gain promotion back to the Premier League, all would probably be forgiven…
