According to a report in the Birmingham Mail, Marley Watkins, who Villa were supposedly interested in during the last transfer window, is set to leave Barnsley on a free transfer this summer.
The midfielder’s contract expires in the summer, and he, along with Josh Scowen, have rejected the offer of a new deal. It has been apparent for a while that Watkins wanted to leave the club as he handed in a transfer request earlier this year.
The 26-year-old has had an impressive season for Barnsley, scoring 10 goals and providing 9 assists. As a result of this, there will definitely be no shortage of Championship teams looking to acquire his services this summer – especially from teams who are looking to add some cutting edge to their midfield.
Therefore, if Villa are still interested and can convince him to join Hourihane and Bree at Villa Park, they will have signed a proven Championship talent without burning another hole in Xia’s wallet.
