Aston Villa and West Bromwich Albion are both eyeing up a move for Barnsley captain Marc Roberts, according to the Birmingham Mail.
Villa boss Steve Bruce is aiming for promotion in his first full season as boss and is willing to compete with other clubs to capture Roberts’ signature.
Roberts, 26, is a target for many clubs including Villa’s rivals West Brom with Tony Pulis also thinking about a move for the 6ft 4in central defender who impressed after taking over the captaincy from Conor Hourihane at the end of January after he moved to Villa.
Bruce is looking to add to his defensive options to challenge the solid centre-half pairing of James Chester and Nathan Baker for the upcoming season.
However, Barnsley boss Paul Heckingbottom will be desperate to keep hold of Roberts after he was named Player of the Season by the fans and played a huge part in Barnsley’s impressive first season back in the Championship.
