According to a report in the Birmingham Mail, Aston Villa are closing in on their fourth signing of the summer with Stoke’s Glenn Whelan set to sign in the very near future.
The Ireland international, who Bruce has been chasing for weeks now, is set to undergo a medical at Bodymoor Heath at some point this evening.
The 33-year old was subject to a £500,000 bid earlier in the summer, but Stoke turned it down as they wanted at least double that. Negotiations have been ongoing and Villa have reportedly agreed to pay the Potters £1 million for the center-midfielder. Although other reports suggest that the deal could be worth as much as £1.5 million.
If he passes his medical, he should be revealed as a Villa player by the end of the week, and will make his debut for the club at some stage during Villa’s pre-season tour of Germany.
Whelan has been a main figure for Stoke ever since he signed from Sheffield Wednesday back in 2008, making 336 appearances for the club. He has also made 81 appearances for the Republic of Ireland.
