According to the Mirror, Sunderland are leading the race to sign Aston Villa defender Tommy Elphick.
The 29-year-old was made Villa captain when he joined from Bournemouth for £3 million at the beginning of the 2016/17 season. However, Steve Bruce doesn’t seem to be much of a fan, and he has now been pushed further down the pecking order following the arrivals of Christopher Samba and John Terry.
Elphick was left out of Villa’s squad for their pre-season friendlies in Germany, and it is believed that Sunderland are now in pole position to acquire his signature.
However, the Black Cats won’t have it all their own way as Birmingham City and Leeds United are also plotting moves for the big center-back.
Should a move to the Stadium of Light go through, Elphick could be joined by Villa teammate, Ross McCormack, who is also one of Simon Grayson’s targets this summer.
