Villa looking to sign young Southampton defender
According to a report in the Bristol Live, Aston Villa are interested in signing Southampton full-back Sam McQueen on a season-long loan after they missed out on Joe Bryan, who decided to sign to Fulham.
McQueen has been attracting a lot of attention from other Championship sides this summer, including Bristol and Middlesbrough, but it looks like Steve Bruce’s side are in pole position to acquire his services.
The 23-year-old has made 28 first-team appearances for the Saints since he broke into the first team in 2014, but his playing time has decreased severely under new manager Mark Hughes.
For example, in the 2016/17 campaign, he made 20 appearances under Claude Puel, but Hughes only played him 7 times last season.
Therefore, he will be looking for my first-team action this season so that he can improve himself, but in order to do this, he will probably have to take a step down into the Championship.
Villa need to strengthen at left-back, so a move to Birmingham would make perfect sense for McQueen.
