If we learnt anything from Aston Villa’s 5-5 draw with Nottingham Forest, it’s that Dean Smith’s side could do with a new goalkeeper.
The result seems to lie more at the feet of Orjan Nyland than any other player, especially given Tammy Abraham’s heroics in attack, scoring four goals on the night.
Therefore, we thought we’d look at some names Villa could sign in January.
1) Marek Rodak
The Fulham shot-stopper has been loaned to Rotherham United for this season, but the 21-year-old may be one for Villa to take a good look at. Rodak has shown himself to be capable under the high ball, facing penalty kicks, and with the ball at his feet in the Championship this season.
2) Tom Heaton
The 32-year-old is a capable goalkeeper, but might be the third-best gloveman at Burnley. With Hart and the currently injured Nick Pope presumably ahead of him in the pecking order, Heaton could make the move down to the Championship.
3) Jordan Archer
The Millwall goalkeeper has impressed in East London so far this season, in what is his fourth season at the club. The 25-year-old has bags of experience for someone of a relatively young age, and a January swoop may be possible for Villa.
4) Simon Mignolet
The Liverpool goalkeeper is now all but certain to leave the Reds in January, and Villa could cash in. Competition is set to be strong though, with several top-flight European clubs keen on the Belgian. If he wants to remain in the UK, Villa could be a good choice for Mignolet.
5) Paulo Gazzaniga
Gazzaniga is in the curious position of hovering somewhere between second and third choice at his club (Spurs), but playing for his country Argentina. The 26-year-old could be available on loan, if Villa wanted to temporarily fill the position on a promotion run.
