Matt Targett will return to Aston Villa when his loan move at Newcastle United ends, but the 26-year-old is unlikely to play for Villa again after falling down the pecking order under Steven Gerrard.
Targett sought a move away after Lucas Digne was brought in from Everton, so he will need replacing and John Percy of the Telegraph believes they’ve identified the ideal option – Calvin Bassey.
The 22-year-old joined Rangers on a four-year deal from Leicester City in 2020 and has gone on to make 63 appearances in all competitions, scoring one goal with six assists.
Bassey didn’t command a regular starting place in his debut season at Ibrox, but he’s one of the first names on the teamsheet now – the uncapped Nigerian defender has made 48 appearances across the board this campaign.
Bassey has averaged a tackle (43) or interception (19) every 42 minutes, been dribbled past only four times, made 36 clearances, had 14/27 successful dribbles, won 51/84 aerial duels, created 22 chances while whipping in 92 crosses with 21% finding a teammate.
The 22-year-old has been dribbled past less than Digne (7) and has put more crosses into dangerous areas, so he might be a good addition to the squad. Bassey set Rangers back £230k two years ago, but his value will have shot up this summer.
But if anyone wants to renew acquaintances with their old manager Steven Gerrard, a summer exodus could be on the cards.
