Journalists criticise ‘quiet’ Ings v Palace

Aston Villa played out a 1-1 draw at home to Crystal Palace on Sunday afternoon and Danny Ings was one of many players who underperformed.

The 29-year-old started alongside Ollie Watkins in attack but missed more opportunities than any of his teammates and was eventually hooked in the second half for a below-par showing.

Ings volleyed over from close range after Palace failed to clear their lines. And he fired an effort wide of the post inside the area after Watkins set up him for what should have been the opener.

Ashley Preece of Birmingham Live gave Ings a player rating of 5/10 and said he was guilty of spurning the best chance of the first half. Preece admitted he expected Ings to tuck away at least one of the three opportunities he had.

Cole Pettem of 7500 to Holte gave the England international a player rating of 5/10 and said he was ‘quiet’ against Palace, having to play deeper due to a lack of support around him. Max Parsons of 90min opted for a player rating of 4/10 and said he was very ‘wasteful’ in front of goal.

Against Palace, Ings played for 70 minutes, had 22 touches, won one aerial duel, completed 66.7% of his nine passes, had three shots without hitting the target, made one tackle, blocked one shot, had one clearance and won one freekick.
