Wesley Moraes endured a disappointing loan move at Club Brugge earlier in the season, resulting in him joining Sport Club Internacional midway through the campaign. But his stint in Brazil has spiralled for similar reasons as in Belgium, so the 25-year-old hasn’t exactly endeared himself to Steve Gerrard.
The 42-year-old was appointed Aston Villa manager while Wesley was on loan at Brugge, but he did send the 25-year-old to Internacional without knowing much about him. That meant Wesley needed to shine at the Beira-Rio Stadium to stake a claim for getting back in the first-team next season.
He’s not done that, however, so it’s hard to see Wesley having a future when he returns to Bodymoor Heath in December. The Brazilian international made six appearances for Brugge (August 2021 – December 2021) and criticised his manager for a lack of playing time.
Wesley has since made 16/28 appearances for Internacional (January 2022 – present), scoring just two goals, so things have only been mildly better. With two career goals in two years, Gerrard won’t consider him an option to dethrone Ollie Watkins or Danny Ings next season.
In other news, could Steve Gerrard sell Tyrone Mings this summer?
