Aston Villa defender Yeimar Mosquera attracting interest from Argentina
  • Yeimar Mosquera is on Argentinian side Independiente’s shortlist for centre-back
  • Aston Villa expect the Colombian to leave on loan this summer
  • Villa signed him in August 2024

Aston Villa academy defender Yeimar Mosquera is attracting strong interest from Argentine giants Independiente. The 21-year-old Colombian youth international has emerged as a defensive target for the South American club as they look to bolster their backline ahead of their upcoming domestic campaign.

Villa initially secured the services of Mosquera in August 2024, signing him from Colombian second-division outfit Orsomarso. Unai Emery’s recruitment team strategically added the physical centre-back after recognising him as a high-potential talent for the future.

To facilitate his immediate transition into European football, the club deployed Mosquera on loan to their Spanish sister side, Real Unión, during the first half of the 2024/25 campaign. Following that foundational year in Spain, Villa integrated Mosquera directly into their U-21 squad for the recent 2025/26 season.

During his 2025/26 campaign in the Premier League 2, Mosquera made significant strides in his tactical maturity and physical development. Tasked with marshalling the young Villans’ backline, the robust, left-footed central defender played over 1,300 minutes, contributing one goal and two assists.

Villa have centered their long-term plan for Mosquera around a development pathway. The club intends to to assess his rapid progress during the current pre-season before determining whether to keep him as a cornerstone of the U-21 setup under Jimmy Shan or find a senior loan to test his readiness for the first team.

It has been reported that enquiries have already been made by two Scottish clubs.

Independiente makes their move

However, external interest is now testing those development plans. According to Argentine newspaper Olé, via Sport Witness, Independiente are searching for defensive reinforcements at the request of manager Gustavo Quinteros.

They are targeting one centre-back, with Mosquera among several names on the shortlist. The report indicates that the Villa man is not their priority, with Huracán’s Lucas Merolla and León’s Valentín Gauthier both ahead of him.

But Olé explains that Mosquera was offered to the club, and officials have received positive reports. Yet, a transfer does not appear to be imminent, as they focus on other targets.

Ultimately, a transfer to Argentina looks highly unlikely at this stage, with a loan move elsewhere emerging as the most probable scenario for Mosquera.

As Independiente have prioritised alternative defensive targets, the Colombian is unlikely to head to Buenos Aires.

Instead, Villa will focus on the interest building across Europe, most notably the recent enquiries from the two unnamed Scottish clubs. The hierarchy remains deeply invested in Mosquera’s long-term future, viewing a loan in a competitive league with regular minutes as the ideal stepping stone to prepare him for a potential role in Emery’s first-team squad within the next two years.
