Lucas Digne Starts For France As Aston Villa Track World Cup Progress

Lucas Digne gave Aston Villa another useful World Cup marker after starting for France in their 3-0 Round of 32 win over Sweden.

The Villa left-back played 78 minutes for Didier Deschamps’ side before Theo Hernandez replaced him, with France already in control and heading towards a last-16 tie.

FIFA’s match report confirmed the 3-0 win, with Kylian Mbappe scoring twice and Bradley Barcola also on target. For Villa, the quieter detail was Digne’s role on the left side of France’s defence.

Digne Gives Emery A Timely Reminder

According to RotoWire’s post-match data, Digne produced seven clearances and one shot on target before his withdrawal. That is exactly the sort of mature, tournament-level defensive output Unai Emery will value before Villa’s own pre-season decisions sharpen.

The 32-year-old is not simply surviving at international level. He is playing meaningful knockout minutes for one of the tournament favourites, in a role that demands concentration behind France’s explosive front line.

That matters because Villa’s left-back balance remains one of Emery’s more delicate calls. Ian Maatsen offers athletic upside and long-term energy, but Digne’s World Cup evidence keeps the veteran’s case alive.

Read Aston Villa previously noted that Digne’s tournament began as a useful subplot for Emery. It now looks more like an early fitness and authority marker.

Villa have several World Cup threads to track, from England’s use of Ollie Watkins to Belgium’s midfield calls around Youri Tielemans and Amadou Onana. Digne’s Sweden display adds a cleaner positive.

A senior defender is returning from the summer with rhythm, status and proof that his game still travels under elite pressure.

For Emery, that is not a small detail. It gives him another reliable reference point before Champions League preparation begins.
