Aston Villa have confirmed that Lewis Dobbin has completed a permanent transfer to Southampton.
The forward leaves Villa Park two years after joining from Everton, having spent most of his time at the club away on loan.
No transfer fee or contract details have been disclosed by either club.
Dobbin joined Villa in June 2024 after progressing through Everton’s academy and making his Premier League debut at Goodison Park. Villa’s original announcement confirmed his arrival from Everton after more than a decade within the Toffees’ system.
The 23-year-old subsequently spent time with West Bromwich Albion and Norwich City before completing his most productive senior campaign at Preston North End.
Preston form earns Dobbin permanent move
Dobbin scored 11 goals for Preston last season and became a regular part of their Championship attack.
His loan spell provided the consistent minutes which had been missing during his earlier temporary moves. He featured centrally as well as from wide positions and produced the strongest scoring return of his career.
ReadAstonVilla previously examined how Dobbin’s Preston form had attracted interest ahead of the summer window.
A permanent move now gives him the opportunity to build on that progress rather than returning to the fringes of Unai Emery’s squad.
Villa already have several established and emerging attacking options, leaving Dobbin without a clear route to regular minutes at Villa Park.
Southampton are signing a player with recent Championship experience and momentum behind him. Villa, meanwhile, have moved another squad player on permanently as Emery’s summer rebuild continues.
Dobbin leaves without making a competitive senior appearance for Villa, but his successful Preston loan helped protect his value and secure the next stage of his career.
