Aston Villa are reportedly leading the race to sign Aaron Wan-Bissaka from West Ham United as Unai Emery looks to strengthen his defensive options before the transfer window closes.
Villa have moved ahead of Arsenal in the pursuit of the 28-year-old, with discussions over a potential move now taking place according to the Daily Mail report relayed by West Ham Zone.
Arsenal have considered the former Manchester United defender, but their interest is not believed to have progressed as far as Villa’s. Everton had also been monitoring his situation but are now reported to be exploring alternative targets.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka Aston Villa talks gather pace
Wan-Bissaka appears likely to leave West Ham following their relegation from the Premier League.
The DR Congo international has five years remaining on his contract at the London Stadium, but has not featured for West Ham since returning from the World Cup. Villa are now described as being in pole position to offer him an immediate route back into the top flight.
Right-back is an interesting area for Emery to address.
Matty Cash remains an established option, but Wan-Bissaka would provide considerable Premier League experience and another specialist choice on that side of the defence. His reputation has largely been built around his speed, tackling and strength in one-on-one situations.
Villa are also continuing to reshape the opposite side of their defence. ReadAstonVilla reported on Tuesday that Matteo Ruggeri’s move from Atletico Madrid is edging closer, with the Spanish club already preparing for his departure.
Signing both Ruggeri and Wan-Bissaka would leave Emery with substantially greater depth at full-back heading into another demanding season.
Nothing has yet been agreed for Wan-Bissaka, but Villa moving to the front of the queue represents the clearest indication yet that their interest could develop into a deal.
