Aston Villa confirm Aaron Wan-Bissaka signing with buy obligation

Aston Villa have officially completed the signing of Aaron Wan-Bissaka from West Ham United on a season-long loan containing a conditional obligation to buy.

The 28-year-old becomes the latest addition to Unai Emery’s heavily reshaped squad and provides immediate competition for Matty Cash at right-back.

Villa confirmed the transfer on Friday morning after reaching an agreement with West Ham earlier this week.

Wan-Bissaka arrives with extensive Premier League experience from spells with Crystal Palace, Manchester United and West Ham, while he also represented DR Congo at the 2026 World Cup.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka completes Aston Villa transfer

Villa’s interest in strengthening at right-back accelerated earlier this month.

Read Aston Villa reported that Villa had moved ahead of Arsenal in the race for Wan-Bissaka after exploratory talks were held with West Ham.

Fabrizio Romano subsequently described Villa’s interest as genuine and concrete, with signing another right-back becoming one of the club’s priorities following Matteo Ruggeri’s arrival on the opposite flank.

The move has now been completed.

Villa have not disclosed the conditions which would trigger their obligation to sign Wan-Bissaka permanently next summer.

The former Manchester United defender spent five seasons at Old Trafford after joining from Crystal Palace and made almost 200 appearances for the club.

He won both the FA Cup and League Cup before moving to West Ham, where he spent the previous two campaigns.

Matty Cash faces major Aston Villa competition

Wan-Bissaka’s arrival creates one of Emery’s most intriguing early-season selection battles.

Read Aston Villa previously analysed how signing another experienced right-back could affect both Cash and Kosta Nedeljkovic.

Cash has remained Villa’s established starter and is under contract until 2029, but Wan-Bissaka provides a markedly different defensive profile.

His ability in one-against-one situations could give Emery another option when Villa face elite wide attackers domestically and in Europe.

With Villa opening their Premier League campaign away at Brighton on Sunday, attention will now turn to how quickly Emery is prepared to involve his newest signing.
