Aston Villa’s £117m Morgan Rogers sale exposed by Chelsea debut record

Aston Villa’s £117million sale of Morgan Rogers looked particularly painful on Monday night as the England international scored on his Chelsea debut and set a Premier League creativity record barely 24 hours after Unai Emery’s side failed to register a shot on target against Brighton.

Rogers helped Chelsea beat Fulham 3-2 at Craven Cottage, restoring their lead before half-time after meeting a cutback from Maxence Lacroix. His influence, however, extended far beyond that finish.

Opta confirmed Rogers created five chances, becoming the first Chelsea player to produce that many on his Premier League debut for the club since detailed records began in 2003-04.

For Villa, the timing could hardly have been more uncomfortable.

Morgan Rogers Chelsea debut highlights Aston Villa’s missing creativity

Rogers operated behind Chelsea’s attack, linking play and repeatedly finding openings against Fulham. The Guardian’s match report illustrated how quickly he established himself alongside Cole Palmer.

That versatility became central to Villa’s progress under Emery. Rogers could carry possession through midfield, create chances around the penalty area and contribute goals himself, making his departure about considerably more than losing one productive attacker.

When Villa confirmed Rogers’ £117million move to Chelsea, he departed with 31 goals and 29 assists from 125 appearances. Replacing that combination of creativity, movement and end product was always likely to require more than simply adding another forward.

A record-breaking debut does not automatically mean Villa were wrong to accept such a substantial fee. However, it demonstrates precisely what their recruitment must now replace.

Aston Villa produced no shots on target at Brighton

The comparison with Sunday’s 4-0 defeat at Brighton is difficult to ignore.

Opta Analyst confirmed Villa failed to register a shot on target across an entire Premier League match for the first time since facing Newcastle United in October 2022.

The wider numbers were equally troubling. As detailed in our Aston Villa player ratings from Brighton, Emery’s side managed only 27 per cent possession, 0.31 expected goals and four touches inside the opposition penalty area.

João Gomes’ first-half red card undoubtedly affected the contest, while Ollie Watkins’ absence further weakened Villa’s attacking options. Those circumstances matter, and one difficult afternoon cannot be explained solely by Rogers’ departure.

Nevertheless, Rogers creating five chances for Chelsea while his former club managed no shots on target crystallised the problem facing Emery.

Unai Emery needs answers before Arsenal visit Villa Park

The uncertainty around Watkins only sharpens that concern after the striker rejected a proposed four-year contract.

Villa must find a reliable way to progress the ball, create opportunities and supply whoever leads their attack. Alejandro Garnacho’s introduction in the 86th minute against Brighton offered little opportunity to assess whether he can provide part of that answer.

The next examination arrives when Arsenal visit Villa Park on Monday, 31 August.

Rogers has already demonstrated what Chelsea acquired. Villa now need to show they have a convincing plan for replacing what they lost.
